Vintage "Spiele Der XX Olympiad Munchen 1972" (Games of the 20th Olympiad Munich 1972) Souvenir Plate.
This is a beautiful blue 9.5" diameter souvenir plate of the Summer Games. All of the lettering around the outside, the athlete in the middle, and the Olympic Village behind him is done in relief. The back of the plate includes an attached metal hanger for wall display, but of course it could also be displayed on a desk top as well. Please excuse the white areas of reflection. I noticed that in direct sunlight, that there is crazing apparent under the glaze, that is not very noticeable in house lighting.
Sadly, "The sporting nature of the event was largely overshadowed by the Munich massacre in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer were killed. Five Black September Palestinian terrorists died." (Wikipedia)
