Receipt that reads, ".25 RECEIVED of the Commissioners for improving the Navigation of the River Susquehanna, from Columbia to Tide, five Dollars and twenty five cents, for helping up with a Boat from the head of the Canal to Columbia, May 14th, 1825, Natham Collins John Enny." In the early days of the United States, a lot of travel was done on the Rivers. So the first improvements were to navigation on the rivers--removing snags (fallen trees), rocks, etc. Back then twenty five cents per day was good pay. 2 3/4 by 7 1/2 inches.Foreign postage is listed for Registered First Class Mail.
